Step 1: Record without watching

What stops people is almost never the talking. It is knowing you will have to watch it afterwards.

So we remove that part. You are going to record, and you are not going to watch.

Why it works

When you know you will review the clip later, the reviewing starts while you are still talking. You listen to yourself from the outside at the same time as you try to say something, and that is why the voice comes out stiff. You are doing two things at once.

Take the reviewing away and only one of them is left.

The exercise

  1. Prop your phone against something. Front camera, so you see yourself, or the rear one if that feels easier. Either works.
  2. Record 60 seconds about anything. What you had for breakfast. Why you started with this. A product you like.
  3. Stop. Put the phone away. Do not watch.

Do it three days in a row. The clips stay on the phone, you just do not open them.

If you watch anyway

Then you do. It is not a rule broken and nothing is ruined. Just notice what happened in your body when you pressed play, and move on to the next day without watching.

Common objections

  • "I do not know what to say." It does not matter. Nobody will see it. Talk about the weather if you have to.
  • "It feels silly talking to a phone in an empty room." Yes. It does the first few times, for everyone. It passes, and it only passes through repetition.
  • "Can I not skip to step 4?" You can. Many do, and most of them quit within a month. The staircase exists so the steps are small enough to actually take.
